Monday Sweater by PetiteKnits

I saw this sweater at the Autumn Fiber Festival 2024 (Mansfield, OH) on a manniquin and immediately went into Northwood Fibers booth and promptly purchased the six skeins of their indie dyed yarn to make my own. 😂

Below are my notes on how I calculated my fades etc.  They have since added a kit to their website - you can find yours here:  https://northwoodsfibers.com/products/mermaid-mayhem-fade-kit

I will be buying from them again!

Color A: Paradise Island
Color B: Calypso
Color C: Under The Sea
Color D: Mermaid Mayhem
Color E: Summer Nights
Color F: Loudmouth

I made this sweater in a size Medium .  The pattern is not a fade - and calls for DK weight yarn.  I am using fingering doubled....

First thing I did was split each skein of yarn into two equal balls.

Then I started doing math.

I wanted my finished sweater at 24 in. total from shoulder to hem.  I have 6 colors... which mean each color was approx 4" including the transition/fade rows.

Since I didn't need any extra of the first two colors for the sleeves, I decided to do this...

First I modified the neckine to be a normal 1x1 ribbing (unlike the pattern).

Color A : 4" (1" neckline, 3" body)
Transition: 1" (1 strand color A, 1 strand color B)
Color B: 3"
Transition 1"
Repeat for each color...

From here, I followed the pattern for the yoke and body, doing the suggested repeats etc - but tracking rows - I was getting approx 6 rows per inch, which allowed me to calculate where all my fades and transitions were.  I also used locking stitch markers to mark each row where a  color transition happened so i could look back and count rows if necessary.

At the end I decided to shorten up the Summer Nights (color E) by one inch and my completed sweater was only 23" from shoulder to hem.

I tracked the sleeves the same way making sure my fades lined up with the body perfectly.  I also decreased extra at the bottom of the sleeves because I like my sleeves a bit tighter.

All my cast offs were following the pattern, which I love because it gives a very professional edge (sewn bind off).  I recommend the one by purl soho if you want to give it a try and have never attempted it before.

***Remember that we are doubling fingering - so the yardage is half of what you purchase.  Keeping this in mind if you decided to make a bigger size than the one I made, I would recomment getting another skein of yarn for the bottom - maybe a dark pink, or adding another color somewhere in between to make sure you have enough yarn.  I had very small amounts left and I'm not sure you could make a bigger size without another skein.

My personal suggestion on adding another skein would be to add
Amphitrite between Paradise Island and Calypso
OR
Sizzling Summer to the end.
