Elsie Scarf (advent 2018)

Elsie Scarf by Katrine Hannibal at Önling

I modified this pattern as I went along on a whim...

Here is what I used/did.

Went up a needle size from pattern  (4.5mm)

1 Skein of DK Weight yarn.  I knit in pattern until I ran out stopping at the end of Row 8 on a right side row.

Then I held two strands of fingering together (a golden brown and a rusty red I had leftover from another project) and knit the WS BUT

*** keeping to the pattern for the outside 4 stitches to continue the icord edge from here on out....

Then continued to work Stockinette on the RS for 6 rows or so.

Depending on how many stitches you end with, you will need to do some math to calculate where your buttonholes go.

I had 62 stitches...

I had 7 stitches at each end, and 6 sets of 8 stitches (giving me 6 buttonholes)

SO...

Continuing with the icord edges on both ends, on the RS I began to create a cabled button hole.

I knit 7, Knit 6 (cabled the next 4 stitches, by dropping two in front) knit 4,cable 4 across, until I finished the last edge....

From here you knit/purl each section...  Basically you are doing stockinette short rows between each buttonhole. You will be joining yarn on the WS and ending on the WS - mine were 6 rows.

Then you break the yarn and begin the next button hole.

If you are confused, this video at 38:21 shows you the technique I used but just remember that since you are cabling the RS, you will be doing your short rows and joining your yarn on the WS and ending on the WS.

When all the sections are completed, join your yarn on the RS, and knit across, doing the opposite cable across 4 stitches at the top of each completed buttonhole.

Contine in Stockinette for 6 rows and then do the cast off of your choice.

I purled the RS, Knit the WS and then did my cast off.

Work in all the ends, wash and block.
